You will learn to design and create a website of your choosing using the WordPress platform.
About this Event

You will be guided through choosing and purchasing a domain name and hosting, installing WordPress onto your webspace, designing the aesthetics and functionality of your website and how to optimise your site for search engine discovery. Participants will learn how to make their content responsive across all devices such as mobile, tablet and desktop.

The aim of this course is to provide you with a good knowledge and understanding of how to set up and maintain your own website using industry-standard software. All participants will have a completed website of their choosing at the end of the course. There are multiple options for the functionality of your chosen site, these include; Portfolio sites, Brochure sites, eCommerce sites and more.

Course Content

Week 1

Course Introduction. Choosing a domain name and hosting package. Installing WordPress manually to your web server using FTP. Creating an @yourdomain.com email address.


Week 2

Session two looks into the design and functionality of your website. Students will use wire-framing to better understand user experience and journey, there will be an introduction to the Wordpress dashboard, where students will install a theme template relevant to their desired website.


Week 3

This session introduces the student to page builders and plugins. During this session, students will work independently (with the help of their tutor via Google Meet) to edit their chosen template from session 2 to add their own content, connect their social media accounts and also create galleries, slideshows, shops, and contact forms to create the look and functionality of their website.


Week 4

This session takes the student through the process of making their website optimised for mobile and tablet devices. During the session the group will also look into adding CSS animations to their sites, including image traditions and button hover effects. This session will look at adding the finishing touches to the design of the student’s website - enabling the student to launch their website to the public.


Week 5

At the start of this session, students will look at using the ‘Yoast’ Plugin and be guided through the application of good SEO. Students will also cover general maintenance of their websites and how to keep it updated in the future. The session will close after a group feedback discussion about each website that has been created by students.


What skills will I need?

Good computer literacy is essential, you must be able to effectively use a computer in order to watch and interact with the tutor on this course. While no prior knowledge of WordPress is required students will need to be generally confident at using computers and basic computer software.


Equipment and Materials?

  • Laptop or Desktop computer (tablets WILL NOT suffice.)
  • £30 (some domain charges vary) to pay your domain and hosting fee (made payable to the recommended hosting provider as outlined in the course introduction. This will cover website fees for one year).
  • Adequate internet connection in order to build your website and to participate in the course*
  • Google account for Google Meet/Classroom access
  • All handouts to be supplied electronically by lecturer


On-site Activities Update

In order to ensure the safety of our staff, students and visitors we have decided not to reopen our college facilities to our Short Course cohort in the Autumn term. This means that there will be no on-site teaching available for Short Courses at this time.
