Join a group of artists in the park for a plein air art experience!
"Plein air" is a French phrase that means in the open air. It refers to the practice of painting outdoors, in natural light, and with the subject in full view.
Our next location is Black Hawk State Historic Site along Route 5 in Rock Island, to capture the beautiful fall colors! 🍁🍂
We will meet at the parking lot next to the Singing Bird Nature Center to go over a few guidelines then disperse.
This is not a guided art experience, but rather an organized gathering where we can paint and connect with each other. Everyone goes at their own pace. It typically takes about 2 hours, but you can come or go as you please.
Any skill level, any medium: Whether you are a beginner or expert, anyone can participate. Please bring your own supplies. I do have some extra paints, brushes and a few easels, but I am limited so just reach out to me if you are in need of some help!
What you will need:
- Canvas or drawing pad
- Your medium of choice (acrylics, watercolor, pastels, ink, etc.)
- Water and cloths for cleaning brushes and a cup/bucket. (I will bring extra just in case).
- I recommend bringing an easel and folding chair. You can sit on the ground if you're comfortable and there are picnic tables in most areas.
Follow park rules: Respect park regulations by properly disposing of trash and adhering to designated areas.
A few reminders during our outings:
- Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun and temps
- Feel free to move around to find your perfect vantage point
- Don't hesitate to ask questions or share techniques with fellow artists
- Remember that plein air painting is about the experience as much as the result
- Whether you're a seasoned outdoor painter or this is your first time setting up an easel outside, I encourage you to embrace both the challenges and joys that come with plein air work. Let's capture not just what we see, but how this place makes us feel in this moment.
