The iconic phrase “Will it Play in Peoria?” is the centerpiece of Playing in Peoria: The Golden Years of Theater in Central Illinois, the Peoria Historical Society’s newest exhibit at the Peoria Public Library Main Library’s Gallery.
In the earliest days of Peoria theater, performances were judged for their appeal to the “average” audience which, reputedly, Peoria’s demographics supported. If a performance played well in Peoria, it would play well across the country.
On display will be photographs of opulent theater houses no longer in existence such as the Grand Opera House, the Coliseum and the Palace Theater. Also, on display will be a few remnants of these graceful edifices, as well as show programs and marketing media.
