“ SICK ROOMS” (working title)This play reading is the result of an spontaneous collaboration that happened in April between Michael Anderton and Patricia Coleman.
Michael recently returned from getting his MFA in directing in Scotland. Patricia recently returned from teaching in Kazakhstan. This recent life elsewhere gives them the perspective of tourists in their own towns, and the permanent feeling that other worlds are always there, somewhere else even when here or elsewhere.
So this play takes place in a hospital, which serves as a refuge and hell.
Patricia and Michael were both so surprised by what came out of their quick process that they wanted to see where else it might go.
Michael is the best kind of director. He is watchful and calm and gets along with humans, which is always a good thing for a director.
Patricia’s training as a theater audience and maker began in 8o’s east village theatre-as-performance art. She directed productions and site specific performances throughout New York until moving to Astana in 2019 where she conducted workshops in domestic theater and led devised productions with students. She is still passionate about the topic of her dissertation: disembodied (more simply, recorded) voice in avant-garde performance.
This collaboration, they hope, will be one of many surprises.
Patricia’s talent of weaving an atmosphere within her work instantly sparked my imagination. I distinctly remember when I first heard the opening song played and hummed at the beginning and I was instantly able to build the space in my mind. With abstract pieces such as this, it is the rules of the space that matters the most and it comes to life within the script.
Michael’s background in theatre began with stage management then quickly grew to various other fields until taking hold in directing. He has directed productions internationally, taking part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival two years in a row. Now that he is back in NY, he hopes to continue learning and developing his craft alongside the talented artists of the Capital District. He hopes you enjoy the piece.
