Play Readings are a great low-pressure way to introduce and familiarise yourself with a play, its themes and characters:
In conservative and respectable Edinburgh in the 1930s, sits the Marcia Blaine School for Girls. Within that drab faculty, the unconventional and charismatic schoolteacher, Miss Jean Brodie, shines brightly.
“Give me a girl at an impressionable age, and she is mine for life.” speaks the dedicated Miss Brodie to her enraptured class of schoolgirls. She has her favourites - her ‘Brodie Set’ - which include the beautiful Jenny, the timid Mary, and the sharp-witted and ever-watchful Sandy.
As the play progresses, Brodie’s liberated behaviour and controversial views attract concerned attention from Miss Mackay, Marcia Blaine’s Head Mistress. Sandy, Brodie’s star-pupil, becomes painfully disillusioned with the woman she previously adored.
'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' is a gripping, entertaining and powerful drama of adolescence and adulthood; of manipulation and suspicion; and ultimately, of betrayal.
