Above & Beyond Children’s Museum is proud to partner with Rogers Behavioral Health to bring families this unique opportunity for learning and connection. By combining Rogers’ expertise in mental health and wellness with ABCM’s playful, family-centered environment, this program supports both parents/caregivers and children- nurturing resilience, compassion, and wellbeing for the whole family.
Program Overview:
This four-week group offers practical ways to maintain a compassionate presence in our daily interactions with our children, family members, and the people we rely on for support. Together, we’ll explore how to care for the children in our lives, while also protecting and nurturing our own wellbeing.
In this group, you will:
-Understand what it means to act with true compassion.
-Identify the stages of compassion fatigue, explore underlying causes, and recognize what’s within your control.
-Learn how to minimize compassion fatigue and build long-term resilience.
-Set clear, realistic expectations for yourself and others.
-Create and maintain personal and family boundaries that support those expectations.
-Explore how your influence shapes the behavior, knowledge, and experiences of those in your care.
-Practice strategies that support and sustain your individual wellbeing.
While parents and caregivers are in these guided sessions, children (ages 2–8) will take part in mindful play activities led by caring staff—giving them a chance to learn, explore, and create in a calm, supportive environment.
The program runs on Wednesdays (October 8, 15, 22, and 29), 5:00–6:30 PM, with an optional family meal from 4:30–5:00 PM to make evenings a little easier for busy families.
Week 1: Self-Compassion and Compassion Fatigue
Parents and caregivers will begin by exploring what self-compassion truly means and how it shows up in daily life. Through guided reflection and small group discussion, you’ll learn Dr. Kristin Neff’s three key elements of self-compassion, recognize the signs of compassion fatigue, and discover simple, meaningful strategies to care for yourself while caring for others.
Children’s mindful play: Calming, creative activities that give children a gentle introduction to mindfulness and self-expression.
Week 2: Compassion in Action and Locus of Control
This session focuses on bringing compassion to life- responding with care while letting go of the need to “fix” everything. You’ll explore what drains your energy, what restores it, and learn to recognize what’s within your control (and what isn’t) using a Locus of Control activity.
Children’s mindful play: Cooperative games and art projects that highlight kindness, empathy, and problem-solving.
Week 3: Expectations and Boundaries
Together, we’ll look at how expectations, both spoken and unspoken, shape family dynamics. You’ll identify realistic expectations for yourself and your family, learn to set compassionate boundaries, and practice positive communication strategies that support family wellbeing.
Children’s mindful play: Play scenarios that gently explore teamwork, respect for boundaries, and positive communication.
Week 4: Family Culture, Wellness, and Resilience Strategies
In the final week, you’ll reflect on how your values, expectations, and boundaries influence your family culture. You’ll learn to use the Wellness Compass to set goals, explore the impact of stress on wellbeing, and build strategies for lasting compassion resilience at home.
Children’s mindful play: Hands-on activities celebrating families, kindness, and the new skills learned throughout the program.
