Welcome to an evening of contemporary music and sound art at the Vaasa City Art Gallery. On the last Friday in April, we invite you to experience a fusion of compositions from Australia and Germany.

The performers will be Panu Sivonen (English horn and bass recorder), Astrid le Clercq (clarinet and bass clarinet) and Marco Bottet (bassoon) from the Vaasa City Orchestra, and the Turku-based sound artist Antti Tolvi (various instruments), who was awarded the Art Prize of Southwest Finland last autumn. Heikki Järvi, a multi-talented musician from Vaasa, will be responsible for the electronics and sound system.

The concert will feature music and sound art from around the world composed in the 21st century, as in addition to European compositions, the concert will feature the Finnish premiere of Pine Chant (2021) by Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth (1982-). Composed for three woodwinds and electronics, the enchanting Pine Chant is based on the annual growth of old Arizona pines and comments on climate change. Hungarian György Kurtág (1926-), who turned 98 in February, is one of the biggest names in contemporary music, and his miniature works for English horn and bass clarinet introduce listeners to the minimalism of German composer Eva-Maria Houben (1955-) of the Wandelweiser group. Houben's One Sound Or No Sound (2022) for two instruments is a long, 14 movement exploration of sound, silence and aspects of playing together. The work is dedicated to Antti Tolvi and Panu Sivonen, and the concert will feature a premiere performance of one or two movements of the work by the two of them. Antti Tolvi will also perform a new work of his own.
In addition to the planned program, Platforms Artist-in-residence Ato Kwamina Hasford aka. Oteanankanduro will be performing his original song 'Tie' with the Poetic Chant Intro from the song 'Amankwaatia' by the Akan cultural group, Manhyia Tete Nwomkoro.
'Nwomkoro' is a classic women-only Akan folk genre. The song choice embodies this style and the chant complements it perfectly. 'Tie' translates to 'Listen' and resonates the struggle of decorum around queerness and queer love.

This event is part of Platforms event series Platform Live and a collaboration with Vasa Artist Guild.
The event will take place after the opening of exhibitions by Helsinki painters Harri Monni (hall) and Jari Jula (gallery).
