About this Event

What will happen during the Playdate?

As part of the Make, Grow + Mend project, Wastesmiths CIC are hosting monthly 'Playdates' where we can gather and play together, exploring different creative processes using the most abundant resources available to us in our communities: 'waste' + 'weeds'.

This Plastic Playdate is related to our We Wear The Trousers and Precious Plastic East projects.

This Plastic Playdate will be led by Wastesmiths Kate and Dan Harper. We'll meet together at the Wastesmiths workshop where we'll start with a cup of tea and an induction to the Precious Plastic East workshop.

We will introduce the process of gathering, cleaning and sorting our plastic materials by size, colour and plastic type. We will give an introduction to the specific tools, materials and techniques we will be using on that day, and there will be time to experiment and prototype individually or in small groups, before working on our individual creations!

The Playdate will focused on upcycling found plastic objects into wearable artifacts, adornments and jewellery, which we will then photograph to capture the transformation. The specific tools, materials and techniques we will use at times will relate to plastic manipulation and at other times will draw on the practice of jewellery making.

You're invited to arrive at 10.30am to start the day with a cuppa. There'll be a 45 minute lunch at around 12noon, so be sure to bring something to fuel your afternoon creativity. We'll wrap everything up by 3.30pm and you're welcome to stay and help us clean up until 4pm, or head off when you're ready.

If time and weather permits, we might start the session with a 'street-combing' session, where we go outside the workshop to gather curious and colourful raw materials, which some others might refer to as 'rubbish'. We'll make a decision about this on the day, but dress with this possibility in mind!

Who is this Playdate for?

Our playdates are open to people of all genders, and backgrounds. The Playdates are primarily aimed at adults, though children aged 12 and over are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

If you're planning to come to the Plastic Playdate, you might already have some making or crafting-related knowledge, e.g. maybe you've experimented with plastic-smithing, or you might have no knowledge at all. Everyone is welcome - whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a newbie plastic curious individual, we’d love you to join us.

This workshop is FREE to join, but you are welcome to make a donation to support our running costs if you would like to.

Who are these sessions for?

Our playdates are open to people of all genders, and backgrounds. The Playdates are primarily aimed at adults, though children aged 12 and over are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

You don't need any existing knowledge or experience, these sessions are designed to be playful, relaxed, and open to all abilities.

What do you need to bring with you?

1) Bring something with you to eat for your lunch. Sainsbury's is roughly a 12 minute walk away, which may be an option. We're going to allow 45 minutes for lunch.

2) If you have any curious or colourful small-ish plastic objects, please bring them!

These might include: bottle tops, used felt tips, plastic lids, old or broken jewellery, christmas cracker prizes, small or broken plastic toys, beach plastic, empty make-up tubes (i.e mascara, lip balms), plastic bags, UBOPs (Unidentified Bits of Plastic).

However all the materials and equipment for the activities will provided, so you don't need to bring anything with you to join in.

3) We will provide hot drinks and biscuits as part of the session and you are welcome to bring your own reusable cup.

3) Bring a coat and footwear suitable for going outside. The Wastesmiths workshop can be chilly, so dress warmly!
