This half day course provides step-by-step guidance on how to plan, design and plant a thriving apple orchard. Perfect for beginners and hobbyists, as well as those considering commercial apple production. The intensive course covers everything from site selection and tree varieties to planting techniques and orchard management.Our tutor Christopher Troy is a member of Future Orchards in Upper Glanmire and a commercial horticulturist with 40 years experience. Christopher trained in Kildalton Horticultural College and from there travelled around Ireland working on various farms gaining experience in both commercial and private orchards.
Christopher manages his orchards organically and encourages others to adopt these regenerative principals.
Course Elements:
This course is an introduction to planning and planting an apple orchard of both dessert and cooking apples.
Practical demonstrations on how to site an orchard as well as how to plant and stake the trees correctly.
Students learn how to have fresh apples for at least 5 months of the year.
Good to Know:
We’ll spend time walking and learning around the farm and gardens so please bring suitable clothing and footwear - and allow for changeable weather!
Tea, Coffee and sourdough fresh form the Breadshed with jersey butter and homemade jam will be served from 8.45am.
