About this Event
As part of Overseeding, Plant Provocations parallels patricia kaersenhout’s exhibit Of Palimpsests and Erasures by exploring stories about people and plants from a decolonizing and decentering perspective. The workshop will dive into the context and history around plants humans engage with today, including tropical houseplants, economic botany, and plant with significant medicinal, culinary, or cultural value. Participants are invited to bring a plant (live houseplant, photo, drawing, seed) and share their story in relation to the plant. An art-making activity accompanies the storytelling as a way to open the door to deeper discussions about plant/human interactions.

Tracy Qiu (she/hers) is a researcher, educator, gardener, and artist of Chinese descent and settler-Canadian acculturation. She is currently working on her doctorate at Concordia University (Montreal, QC) where she explores the entangled colonial roots of Western plant knowledge. Her research asks what it means for botanical gardens – as inherently colonial entities – to ‘decolonize’. Her work engages with garden organizations such as parks, botanical gardens, and gardening groups by exploring and applying decolonizing and decentering practices to questions about identity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging in public landscapes.
