About this Event
In September the brilliant Brazilian mural artist Thiago Mazza @mazzolandia will be painting a giant plant mural in the front garden of 195 Mare Street. It will be unveiled on 23 September at 6pm.
Join us to celebrate Plant Power, meet the artists involved and hear more about the story behind the mural.
The mural is inspired by Hackney's history of plant cultivation and Loddiges Nursery, which was based on the other side of Mare Street in the 18th and 19th centuries. The nursery grew plants from all over the world in huge hothouses - palms, orchids, ferns, rhododendrons, camelias, azelias, wisteria, bamboo, and thousands more - introducing new species to Europe and changing our habitats forever.
Loddiges' story connects us to Hackney's long history of migration - many of the plants came from the homelands of Hackney's current residents. And it sparks conversations about colonial exploitation of natural resources and the implications of climate change for our habitats.
