What happens when pixels go on a picnic? Elisa von Brockdorff invites us to explore this playful idea through her latest photography series, where the boundaries between light, form, materiality and imagination dissolve.
Employing a vibrant mix of analogue filters, highly reflective surfaces and peculiar objects, von Brockdorff creates ambiguous visual narratives. These works reflect her research and experimentation with light, marking a departure from her previous work, where lighting effects were intentionally kept minimal.
At the heart of this collection lies a dynamic interplay between planes and the commanding presence of light, which takes center stage — both figuratively and literally. The backgrounds, far from being passive, emerge as vital components of the overall tableau. As work on the series has progressed, objects within her compositions have become more minimal, serving as mere catalysts for the brilliance of light, shadow and reflection.
By incorporating intricate lighting setups, von Brockdorff transforms empty spaces into vibrant staged environments. These illuminated spaces offer viewers a reimagined aesthetic that emphasizes the beauty found in light as it interacts with mundane objects. It's an invitation to slow down and observe our surroundings with a sense of curiosity and an openness to the multitude of visual possibilities available around us.
