CycleNuts Selfie Cycle Tours
CycleNuts Selfie Tours tie together fun, interesting, scenic, historic, tasty, and refreshing points of interest along a bikeway focused tour route where you ride at your pace and your pleasure. You are the tour boss. You pick the date and time - the ticket is good for any day or time - dates/times listed only as a guideline to give you an idea of how long the tour normally takes.
With these smart-guided bikeway cycling adventures you bring the bike and smart phone, and CycleNuts provides the Smart Guide. The Smart Guide gives you voice and visual turn-by-turn instructions along an expertly designed and tested tour route.
Do the tour solo or bring along your crew. 1 ticket = fun for all! Easily stop anywhere along the way to visit attractions or refreshments and the Smart Guide will continue the route from wherever you are when you are ready to roll.
You can invite as many people as you want on your tour.
1 tour ticket = fun for everyone!
Ride it as a 1-day near-century or get your travelling bags on and ride it as an Overnight Tour (OT) with a comfy midway destination stop. Or, even, pack your camping gear for any of the several primitive camping spots along the Montour Trail. Your choice - both options included.
This tour has all the bells and whistles you have come to expect with a CycleNuts Selfie Tour - bikeway focused, tested, and approved tasty spots, points of interest along the way, and very sensible options for both long and short distance riders.
The cycling adventure takes you through the beautiful Alleghany Mountains that surround Pittsburgh; along the banks and over the Ohio River, Allegheny River, and Monongahela River; through three railroad tunnels – the Enlow, Greer, and National; over several scenic bridges including Hot Metal Bridge and McKeesport Connecting Railroad Bridge; through the western edge of downtown Pittsburgh, and Point State Park featuring the Great Alleghany Passage (GAP) Trail Western Terminus, historical Fort Duquesne, and the Fort Pitt Museum (bring a camera - this is a selfie tour... right?).
The Smart-guided 84-mile route (81 miles for the 1 day near-century option) is 83% bikeway and comes with CycleNuts' 50% downhill guarantee. The route is a mix of asphalt, crushed stone rail-to-trail, paved community bikeways, and roadways. The segments that are not bikeway are predominantly low traffic and Google bicycle-approved roadways. If you are more comfortable using sidewalks in these areas, then you will find some of the roadway segments have sidewalks along the way.
Look at this nice list of 5 bikeways your wheels will roll on:
Montour Trail
Ohio River Trail
Arrowhead Trail
Three Rivers Heritage Trail
Great Alleghany Passage (GAP) Trail
The route follows the topography of Pittsburgh, which is nestled in the Alleghany Mountains on the banks of three rivers. There are segments off of the rail-to-trail where you will use your deepest bike gear, e-bike muscle, or be bike-hiking (no shame in that - it is a pro tactic often used to save the legs/energy reserves). Sweating is optional, but probably unavoidable - the humid Alleghany terrain is ribboned with rivers, streams, and creeks. Nevertheless, this is a Selfie Tour, and you will set your own pace, starting time, and touring agenda with CycleNuts' expert Smart-guided cycle tour pattern.
This is a perfect weekend destination adventure! If doing the tour as an overnight 2-day tour, see the instructions included in your ticket purchase for overnight parking of your vehicle at the starting spot. Also, the overnight stay hotel suggestion in the route directions is CycleNuts approved based on zero-bedbug complaints. The cost of the overnight stay or parking is not included in the tour ticket.
Easily, with the Smart-guide, you can wander away from the planned route to explore areas and points of interest that you find along the way. The Smart-guide will get you back on the route when you are ready.
