You're invited to celebrate the release of Chapel Hill-based singer-songwriter and cellist Pippa Hoover’s new single, On the Mountaintop, Alone, with a full-band show at Yonder Bar. The show will trace Pippa’s deepening relationship with the North Carolina Triangle, blending nature-rich songwriting with soulful vocals and plenty of cello. You might know Pippa as the cello half of local folk-pop duo Honey Magpie, but she's also been performing solo around the Triangle since 2014. Her 2018 debut album, Night Bird Singing, introduced her signature folk-classical sound. Outside of music, Pippa is also an avid hiker and backpacker whose songwriting is deeply influenced by her experiences on trail.
On the Mountaintop, Alone is no exception. It pulls imagery from Occoneechee Mountain’s Mountain Loop Trail and overlook point in two contrasting tracks: one a raw, folk-rock take on unforgiveness, the other a quieter reflection on solitude.
At the show, Pippa will perform her new single in full, as well as old favorites from her first album and yet-to-be released songs, all organized to chronicle her connection to the Triangle. Pippa will sing about leaving home, cutting ties, and the tenacious pursuit of her dreams, with lyrics full of the North Carolina forests, creeks, and creatures she has come to love. She'll be joined by guest musicians Franklin Bellflower (guitar), David Criswell (bass), and Justin Ellis of Ravary (drums) for a full-band sound.
Opening the show is Ravary, the solo-with-friends project of NC musician Justin Ravary Ellis (Slow Teeth, Easter Island, Happy Abandon). Born in London and having spent the summers of his formative years with French-speaking family near Montreal, Ravary’s music is equally inspired by the synths and guitars of the 90’s Britpop as the large folky hooks of Arcade Fire and traditional Quebecois and North Carolinian folk music. The project released its debut album “Hands To Feel” independently in June 2020; a follow-up single "Glowing" followed in 2022, with its companion EP, "Almanac", released in early 2025.
There is a $12 suggested donation, and the first 50 donors will receive a sticker featuring the On the Mountaintop, Alone album art as a thank you.
On the Mountaintop, Alone will be available for preorder on Bandcamp on August 15, 2025.
