Hosted by Lallemand Oenology New Zealand, this will be a series of insights and tastings from local and international speakers, giving their knowledge and experience on developing Pinot Noir around the world, retaining those key characteristics of the varietal, whilst showcasing the regionality of the region.
This event is for everyone involved in the wine industry from sommelier, winemaker, cellar door personnel to grape grower.

Guest Speakers
Sam Harrop MW began his career as a winemaker in New Zealand, training at Villa Maria’s wineries in Auckland, Blenheim, and Hawke’s Bay.
He gained further experience, heading overseas to work at Littorai Wines in California and Rosemount Estate in Hunter Valley. Sam joined UK retailer Marks & Spencer in 1997 and help the company achieve significant improvements in the quality of their wines.
He passed the Masters of Wine exam in 2002. Sam has in-depth knowledge of the business of wine and understands what it takes to succeed in the crowded global marketplace.
He is an adviser to European wineries and distributors; seeking to improve wine quality and promote their brands to export markets. Sam created his own label, Cedalion, from vineyards in Waiheke Island, where he resides.
He co-owns Peninsula Wines with Andreas Kubach, a dynamic Madrid-based sales & marketing company in the wine business. He consults for several wineries all over the world, including Chile, Spain, Turkey, Australia, Japan. Sam Harrop has been the Co-Chairman of the International Wine Challenge from 2006 to 2016, co-authored the book ‘Authentic Wine’ with Jamie Goode and was voted in 2013 by Drinks Business as the 10th most influential wine consultant in the world.
After obtaining her B.Sc in Agriculture (microbiology) with Distinction from McGill University, Ann joined Lallemand as a microbiologist in the R&D department.
While continuing to work for Lallemand, she attended Oregon State University to obtain her M.Sc. with Honors where her thesis topic was Sensory profile of Oregon Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fermented with different Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
She also completed her WSET Level 3 and is a member of the Association Canadienne des Oenologues.
Ann continued after to work for Lallemand, first as the R&D Coordinator, and since 2006, as the Communication Manager for the Oenology group.
She is the author and co-author of many technical articles and Lallemand’s communication documents. Her focus and interest are on education on the topic of wine microbiology, hosting seminars and tastings around the world to understand better wine microbes and biodiversity and the importance they have in wine quality and fermentation.
Eveline Bartowsky is the Lallemand R&D Manager for Australia and New Zealand.
She has a PhD in Microbiology and has been working in the wine industry for almost 30 years. Prior to joining Lallemand, Eveline led the bacteria and MLF research team at AWRI and managed the Microorganism Culture Collection. In addition to managing research projects with universities and research institutes, and winery trials, Eveline provides technical support to all Australian and New Zealand wine regions.
Eveline is also active in the wine community – she is an adjunct associate professor at the University of Adelaide where she lectures in wine microbiology and is an external advisor to PhD and Masters students. She also works with Lincoln and Auckland universities on various research projects. Eveline is an Editor on several peer-reviewed wine journals – Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research, Annals of Microbiology, and American Journal of Enology and Viticulture.
Romina Meloni is the Lallemand Technical Sales Manager for New Zealand. She is an experienced winemaker with over 10 years’ practice in the international wine industry.
After graduating with a viticulture and oenology degree from the University of Verona, Italy Romina has travelled around the wine world working in Northern and Southern hemisphere regions including Marlborough New Zealand, Colchagua Valley Chile, Saint Romain Burgundy and in Languedoc France, and Montalcino & Soave in Italy. Prior to joining Lallemand she focused on Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc winemaking in New Zealand and in France.
Currently Romina manages multiple projects in partnership with NZ wineries, Bragato Research Institute, and supporting and providing technical support to the local distributors and wineries.
