The Stour River ride through to manuka and Double huts is not a hard ride. But it does contain a few river crossings on the way. Shoes/boots should be considered necessary, but up to you.
Both huts have a horse paddock for our trusty steads over night.
However, as this area is quite popular, chances are the bunks in the huts will already be taken by other users.....so, this is a trek where we all need to be self sufficiend, including sleeping arrangements. I have done this before and its not difficult providing you plan the gear you are going to need, and/or, team up with a buddy and share the load. Of course if you have a pack horse even easier. The camping area is hard ground so a good mattress is recommended.
PROGRAM: Arrive at staging area (to be confirmed) Sat morning, get organised with boots in stirrups 1030hrs. We ride through to Double hut for the first night...an easy day's ride. Sunday we explore further up the valley with a return to camp at Double Hut for the night. Monday, clean up, pack up and return to staging area.....go home.
As for terrain. Big wide open river valleys. No serious hills but spectacular views and landscapes. NZ Topo Maps will show you in more detail but being an early season ride, nothing overly adventurous. A great ride for thise who are not familiar with overnighting in the open with plenty of support and assist if require.
Charity Donation $50.00 per rider or $100.00 for the family paid in full prior to the day. I will provide a bank account number. All goes to the charity. So kids are welcome with responsible adults, and you can even bring your FRIENDLY dog as well.
Usual rules apply.
We all ride on the basis of self assessement and acceptance of the risks involved.
No smoking, No drugs, and vaping only tolerated away from other riders.
Each rider is solely responsible for their horse(s), dog, and children ( Im not a baby sitter)
