This Poetry In Motion Slam is the fourth heat for the 2024 Pōneke Wellington Poetry Slam Champs. The top three scoring poets from this event will gain a spot in the regional finals!
What is a slam?
A Poetry Slam is a competitive poetry event where poets compete for points. Five random audience members are tasked with being the judges and they score each poem out of 10 to one decimal place.
The number of poets involved and number of rounds can change event-to-event, but there are some universal rules – no props, no costumes, poems must be three minutes or less, poets must read original work, and no punching down or hate speech.

How To Participate in the 2024 Pōneke Wellington Poetry Slam Champs:
Heat #1 | Windswept Slam | 6 July 2024
Heat #2 | Windswept Slam | 16 August 2024
Heat #3 | Poetry In Motion | September TBC
Heat #4 | Poetry In Motion | 19 September
Pick one heat to compete in and one back up heat, in case the other is full. There are twelve spots per heat.
Email [email protected] with your picks, even Windswept Slams.
All heats will be two round poetry slams with no knockouts.
Bring three poems max. 3 minutes each.
✅ YES, bring poems you have written.
✅ YES, feel free to read poems off a phone or paper.
❎ NO, you can't use props or costume.
❎ NO, you can't use backing music or dancers.
❎ NO, we won't tolerate hate speech.
The top three poets from each heat will go through to the Pōneke Wellington Poetry Slam Champs at the National Library of New Zealand in October 2024.
Poets, please remember the 'judges' will be random members of the audience. And, although poems are scored don't take any notice of those silly numbers. Slams are a sneaky way to get the general public engaged in poetry and for us to share our work!
If competitions aren't your jam head along to a Poetry In Motion Open Mic Night held the first Thursday of every month at The Fringe Bar in Wellington.
