Introducing the Piedmont Community Pool Workshop Series.About this Event
The City of Piedmont has selected ELS Architecture and Urban Design as the architect for the New Piedmont Community Pool Project. The City and ELS look forward to a robust community collaboration that results in an Earth-friendly, state-of-art aquatic center. This place will serve Piedmonters for the next several decades, delivering excitement, delight and fun while making a significant contribution to the public realm that is Piedmont’s Civic Center.
The City and ELS are kicking off a community workshop series for the new pool project. Three workshops will advance the community through the conceptual design process. At the conclusion of the workshop series, we hope to have gathered the necessary information to arrive at a preferred concept for the new center. The workshops will be held in person at Piedmont Veterans Memorial Building, 401 Highland Avenue.
We look forward to participation from all age groups, but if you are interested in childcare for any of the evening workshops, childcare will be available at Havens Schoolmates. Please RSVP to any and all sessions, as well as reserve Schoolmates childcare during the registration process.

Open House – Gallery Walk

This round is your first chance to learn about the work to come. We will explore programming potential, project size and scope, timeline, and budget. You’ll be able to meet and engage Piedmont City Staff and the ELS Architecture and Urban Design team on a range of topics, issues, and concerns. This is also an opportunity to share your dreams, wishes and aspirations for the new Piedmont Community Pool. There have been multiple studies for a potential community aquatic center dating back nearly thirty years, most recently in 2016. This Open House and Gallery Walk mark a new phase, in which the City and ELS will combine the reservoir of known information with new input from Piedmonters at the Gallery Walk. Next, ELS will move forward with a programming and conceptual design effort developing a draft program and two to three concept directions for presentation, comment, and critique at Community Workshop #2.
Community Workshop #2, Tuesday, November 16, 2021
Presentation of Concepts and Charrette
7:00pm to 8:30pm
This evening starts with a statement of welcome followed by a brief presentation of ELS’ programming and design effort over the previous four weeks. ELS will present a draft program outlining potential features and the size and scope of various proposed project elements. Two to three concepts will show how the program elements fit within the project’s site constraints and budgetary requirements. Following the ELS presentation, all present will be invited to join a Table-Top Design Team for a twenty-minute charrette. This is a process that is designed to give each Design Team member a chance to comment on, critique and evaluate the two to three concepts presented by ELS, or to suggest other ideas or even a completely new concept. Following the charrette session, each Table-Top Design Team will present its findings in a brief presentation. ELS and the City team will collect and record each team’s findings and synthesize all data into a preferred conceptual direction that reflects the consensus achieved. The preferred direction will be presented at Community Workshop #3.

Presentation of Preferred Concept and Charrette
7:00pm to 8:30pm
On our final evening of the Community Workshop Series, participants will be given a brief presentation of ELS’ programming and design effort over the past 4 weeks. ELS will present a final draft program outlining the potential features and a preferred conceptual direction showing how the final draft program elements fit within the project’s physical and budgetary requirements. Following the ELS presentation, everyone will again be invited to join a Table-Top Design Team, for a twenty-minute charrette – a process that allows each Design Team to comment on, critique, and evaluate the preferred conceptual direction. Following the charrette session, each Table-Top Design Team will present their findings in a brief presentation. ELS and the City team will again collect and record each team’s findings and synthesize all data into a preferred final concept that reflects the consensus achieved. The preferred direction will be presented to City Council in early 2022, for approval to advance the project to the next phase, Schematic Design.
