Join us at the Village Community Cinema for our final PICTURE THIS - The Inspiration Behind the Creation for 2024 . In this series, artists, film makers, musicians, creatives, share with us, the film that has influenced or inspired their artistic practice, analytically reflecting on their work in correlation with their chosen film. The film of cult film director Ed Wood's life was brought to the screen in 1994 and seen by a 23 year old Edward Gains on a chilly night on a cinema screen in his hometown of Dunedin.
Directed by one of Edward's favourite directors of the time, Tim Burton, it struck a note for the obscure artist who was still trying to find his way in the world and to find his own voice. Inspired by the depiction of Ed Wood as an ambitious but troubled movie director who is trying to fulfil his dreams despite his obvious lack of talents, it gave Edward the courage to move away from being just a cartoonist as he was at the time and to start playing music and to start writing his own songs.
The black and white aesthetic of the film and also Martin Landau's Oscar winning performance as a tragic and aging Bela Legosi further sealed the deal for Edward, and this film has gone on to be a constant inspiration for him through a nearly 30 year musical 'career'. Join Edward in a celebration of this cult classic as he speaks about his love of this film, and also plays a couple of his own 'monster' songs.
