Informal picking sessions are a longstanding musical tradition in the Commonwealth. Whether located on a back porch, in a church basement, or at a backyard barbecue, jams provide a setting in which musicians share the unwritten rules as well as the tunes that form the basis of the style. At this session, folklorist Dr. Erika Brady will be joined by noted fellow bluegrass musicians to discuss the special role of these gatherings in the history and current state of the music here in our region - the place where bluegrass began. If we are lucky, they may even break out the instruments and showcase how it’s done!
