About this Event
Join esteemed pianists Father Paul Maillet and Vladimir Stoupel for an enthralling recital that explores the depth and variety of the four-hand piano repertoire. This program showcases the evolution of the genre through the works of Mozart, Schubert, and Fauré, highlighting the intimate collaboration between the two pianists.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Sonata in D Major, K. 381
Composed in Salzburg during Mozart’s youth, this sparkling early work reflects the brilliance and balance of the Classical style. Its lively and virtuosic character is marked by dynamic interplay and playful, conversational exchanges between the pianists, offering a glimpse into Mozart’s compositional mastery and his approach to chamber music as both intimate and theatrical.
Franz Schubert: Fantasia in F Minor, D. 940, Op. 103
Written during the final year of Schubert’s life, this masterpiece is a pinnacle of the piano duet repertoire, combining rich thematic development with emotional depth. Dedicated to his close friend and collaborator Caroline Esterházy, the work traverses moments of poignant melancholy and bold grandeur, exemplifying Schubert’s late Romantic sensibility and genius for creating lyrical themes and intricate formal structures.
Gabriel Fauré: Dolly Suite, Op. 56
This charming collection of six short pieces was composed for the young daughter of Fauré’s friend, Hélène Bardac, nicknamed “Dolly.” The suite showcases Fauré’s refined lyricism, elegant harmonic palette, and mastery of color and texture. From the serene Berceuse to the lively Le Pas Espagnol, it evokes the innocence and whimsy of childhood while providing a colorful journey through Fauré’s musical imagination.
Father Paul Maillet, an esteemed expert in the Taubman Approach with a profound understanding of piano technique and pedagogy, collaborates with Vladimir Stoupel, a distinguished international soloist and chamber musician renowned for his interpretations of Romantic and 20th-century repertoire. Together, they illuminate the expressive dialogue, collaborative nature, technical precision, and artistic expression that characterize the piano duo tradition. Following their performance at St. Mary’s, the two pianists will present this program in Berlin during the Festival “The Last Rose of Summer” in August 2025.
