About this Event

Come join us to watch the film Don't Blink - Robert Frank, and learn about the Swiss American photographer and documentary filmmaker Robert Frank.

Don’t Blink was directed by Laura Israel released in 2015, and features Robert Frank along with his wife and artist June Leaf. He revolutionized photography and independent film. He documented the Beats, Welsh coal miners, Peruvian Indians, The Stones, London bankers, and the Americans. This is the bumpy ride, revealed with unblinking honesty by the reclusive artist himself.

Frank is best known for the seminal 1958 photo book , about post-war America. After traveling across the US in 1955 and shooting about 28,000 photos of all levels of American society, Frank selected 83 of the images and publish them in his book.

Hosted by photographer and AZPA Board Member Rick Gayle, this event is free and limited to 25 AZPA Members. Not a Member?

The gallery will open at 5:30PM, with the movie starting at 6:00PM through 9:00PM.

Generously hosted at . Thank you!

About the Artist

Robert Frank was a Swiss born photographer in 1928. He traveled to the United States in 1947, where Alexey Brodovitch hired him to make fashion photographs at Harper's Bazaar. Although a few magazines accepted Frank's unconventional use of the 35-millimeter Leica for fashion work, he disliked the limitations of fashion photography and resigned a few months after he was hired. Between 1950 and 1955 he worked freelance producing photojournalism and advertising photographs for LIFE, Look, Charm, Vogue, and others. Frank secured a Guuggenheim Fellowship and in 1955 began travel across America. He made 28,000 shots and 83 of those became the book The Americans.
