This evening, the members of the Photo Cascadia Collective—Erin Babnik, David Cobb, Adrian Klein, Kevin McNeal, Zack Schnepf, Sean Bagshaw, and Chip Phillips—will be on hand to talk about their strikingly beautiful new book, WASHINGTON EVERGREEN: LAND OF NATURAL WONDERS (Timber Press). This book, apt for gift-giving (‘tis the season now), fills a gap, as there have not been many recent pictorial books that present this part of the world in all its various array of landscapes. These photographers are widely published in magazines; it’s now lovely to have some of that work in this book, which includes a foreword by old Elliott Bay friend, award-winning naturalist Robert Michael Pyle.
About the Authors
Erin Babnik’s dedication to the medium of photography evolved out of her years working as an art historian and archaeologist, photographing in museums and in archaeological sites throughout Europe and the Middle East for the purposes of teaching and research. She subsequently spent years producing photographs on assignment and for licensing, all the while expanding her personal photographic excursions to increasingly remote outdoor locations. She now works as a full-time landscape photographer, traveling extensively from home bases in both California and Slovenia and teaching photography workshops worldwide. Erin is honored to be a Canon Explorer of Light.
From Ashland, Oregon, Sean Bagshaw's full-time photography career started in 2004 after 12 years as a middle school science teacher. He began taking photos when he was in college to record and share his adventures on rock climbs and mountaineering expeditions. Now he spends a lot of his time exploring the landscape, chasing light and sleeping in his van. Photography has provided Sean with some wonderful opportunities. At the top of the list are being a member of the photography team, Photo Cascadia. Sean's previous career as a science teacher makes photography education a good fit so when he's not creating images Sean enjoys teaching and sharing what he knows about photography and image developing with others. He teams up with fellow Photo Cascadia members leading workshops around the world. He also teaches digital image developing classes, lectures and produces video courses to teach people digital image developing.
As a long-distance hiker, David Cobb has sharpened his photographic perspective over the years on the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide, the Canadian Divide and most recently walking across Iceland. After years of capturing images along the trail and becoming more and more passionate about the art of photography, he took the leap and “quit his day job” to devote himself full time to his photographic work. Now as David photographs throughout the US and around the world, he is continually awed by the broad spectrum of nature’s offerings—from a delicate heliconia flower on the exotic island of Rarotonga to the sweeping Icelandic landscape. His particular fondness for the Pacific Northwest is reflected in his local outdoor images. David’s goal is to capture the wonders he sees in nature for the enjoyment of all those with an eye for the extraordinary.
Adrian Klein has an endless passion for the outdoors and landscape photography. He has traveled the parks, shorelines and wilderness capturing images that represent each area through his artistic eye from close to home to far-off trails. Adrian is an active member in the photographic community including his tenure on Professional Photographers of Oregon Board of Directors and leading the effort to help create Photo Cascadia. Awards and juried exhibitions include PPO, PPA, ICPA and Center for Fine Arts. Besides his personal photography adventures, he enjoys helping others learn more about photography and the outdoors.
Kevin McNeal is a Washington photographer focusing on grand colorful landscapes that reflect unique places on earth. Capturing moments of magical light he leverages perseverance, patience, and dedication to capture his images. Traveling across North America he explores diverse landscapes and remote wilderness to promote conservation. His award-winning images can be seen in galleries and showings across the United States. His images have been selected for the Art Wolfe Environmental Photography Invitational and he was the grand winner of the landscape category for the Natures Best Awards. “The Earth shares beauty and secrets with those of us who pay attention. These glimpses of nature can be fleeting and never the same twice, so I feel it is important to share them in photographs.”
Spokane, Washington based photographer Chip Phillips began his relationship with photography in 2006 when his father gave him his old Pentax Spotmatic film SLR camera. Chip was immediately hooked, and soon made the transition to digital. Given his lifelong love of the outdoors, he naturally made the progression to focusing on landscape photography. A professionally trained classical musician, Chip also performs as Principal Clarinet with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra and is Professor of Clarinet at Gonzaga University. Chip’s images have been published in various magazines, including Popular Photography and Imaging, Digital Photography, and Digital Photo Magazine. Chip won first and second place in the landscapes category of Digital Camera magazine’s 2009 Photographer of the Year contest.
Zack Schnepf is an award-winning photographer specializing in fine art landscape photography. “Art is in my blood. My father is a well-known poster artist and painter. My mom is a painter, and print maker and my brother is a designer at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. Art is a way of life for my family, and I will hopefully pass it on to my kids as well. The love of nature is also something that my family and I are passionate about. I’ve been hiking, biking, rock climbing and backpacking since I was young. My parents taught me to appreciate the beauty in nature and to help preserve it for all to enjoy.”
