About this Event
Hi, it’s Vanessa here, excited to start a new year with some fresh, fun ENLIGHTENMENT talks and events for you.
One big inspiration for my starting ENLIGHTENMENT was the . While spending last summer in London, I attended these biweekly social talks (held in pubs instead of cafes), where an all-ages group of different backgrounds and nationalities sat down to chat about life, philosophy, and how the two go together.
We discussed questions like “Can being in love really bring you true happiness?” and debated topics like “Is ‘an eye for an eye’ mindset the right way to do capital punishment?” No professional experience or masters degree was needed. Between 60 to 90 people showed up every time, and after ordering a gimlet, a glass of rose, a pint of Guinness, we talked philosophy in plain English and applied it to our everyday lives. It was great.
So I am bringing that Philosophy Café concept to Ruhstaller’s BMST taproom in Downtown Sacramento. Besides pints and wine, you can BYO coffee, and there will be Saturday afternoon mimosas.
I asked philosophy professors at Sacramento State University to join me in this inaugural Café. We decided to focus this first one on topics many of us think about when one year ends and a new one begins — how to reflect on the past, prepare for the future, make the right New Year Resolutions, and stick to them.
I thought we’d start by asking the professors about how philosophers have addressed, renewal, fresh starts and resolutions for a new period of life. Then we can talk amongst ourselves about how we’re going to address those in our own lives. The intent: Start 2025 with an enlightened outlook on life.
This concept isn’t set in stone. We’ll try it out this way in January, maybe we’ll tweak it for next time. But no matter what, we’ll have good cheer and good conversations.
