SIBELIUS Symphony No. 3
Grieg’s Piano Concerto is one of the most popular works in the orchestral repertoire. From the drama of the opening timpani roll to the anthemic finale, this evening we will be treated to an interpretation of the iconic piece by ‘Britain’s top pianist’ (The Times), Sir Stephen Hough.
Our Finnish Principal Conductor Santtu is at home in this repertoire: he frames Grieg’s concerto with music by his compatriot Sibelius. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 3 sweeps listeners up in its confident, warm energy right from the start, and packs many pleasures into its half-hour span.
First, enjoy Sibelius’s musical depiction of the Oceanides, sea-nymphs of Greek mythology – one of his most loved works.
