About this Event
The PHD Series at Gorton Hub
Gorton has a remarkable history – one that has been intertwined with Chetham’s Library for centuries. Founded by Humphrey Chetham to give working‑class boys access to education, the library still honours that mission today. What many people don’t know is that Humphrey had deep roots in Gorton and St James’ Church, a connection that continued when St James generously donated their library to support the students of Chetham’s School.
Fast‑forward 500 years and Chetham’s Library now holds an extraordinary archive of documents, artefacts and treasures. Among them is a dedicated Gorton chest filled with unique pieces of local history that help tell the story of the area and its people.
Now, Gorton Hub is proudly partnering with Chetham’s to bring this history home through a brand‑new series of six PHD talks hosted right here at the Hub.
Our Fourth Talk: Life and Times of Humphrey Chetham
This talk turns the spotlight on one of Manchester’s most influential yet elusive figures, Humphrey Chetham. Though his name is woven into the fabric of the city, much of his life remains little known. Drawing on fresh perspectives and lesser explored links, this talk traces his obscure origins and uncovers his connections to Gorton and the wider Manchester area, offering a fuller picture of the man behind the legacy.
Following Chetham’s journey from modest beginnings to immense success, the talk explores how he built his fortune and established himself as a major figure in the commercial life of seventeenth century England. It places his achievements within the shifting landscape of the time, revealing how business, belief and politics were deeply intertwined.
Set against the backdrop of the Personal Rule of Charles I and the English Civil War, the story also examines Chetham’s role during a period of profound national upheaval. Through this lens, we begin to understand not only how he navigated uncertainty, but how those turbulent years helped shape his lasting impact on Manchester.
Join Stephen Guscott for an engaging and thought provoking journey into the life of a man who helped define the city, and discover the hidden story behind a truly iconic figure.
