Haymount’s Music for a Great Space Series kicks of a new year of exciting music with the 1925 classic film Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney and accompanied by renowned organist Dorothy Papadakos. This performance will include a large screen experience complete with popcorn and all the trappings of a night at the theatre! The film is an adaptation of Gaston Leroux's novel and follows the story of a disfigured musical genius known as the Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House. He becomes infatuated with Christine Daaé a talented young singer and uses his influence to help her rise to stardom while simultaneously terrorizing the opera house's management. The Phantom's obsession leads to tragic consequences as he attempts to win Christine's love ultimately resulting in a dramatic confrontation with her true love Raoul de Chagny. This is a performance that promises fun for families and cinema and music lovers of all ages!
Dorothy Papadakos is an American concert organist composer lyricist playwright and author. She is the former organist at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City the first female organist to hold that post. She was also organist for the Paul Winter Consort at the cathedral's Easter and Christmas services and performed with the ensemble on their Grammy Award-winning album Silver Solstice released in 2005.
