Pett Level 10.5 mile walk

This is a walk of approximately 10.5 miles, which starts on the East Sussex coast at Pett Level, on it we will explore Winchelsea & Icklesham, on our day out over the county border.
We have a choice of two paths to start the walk, either on the seawall or to go along the shingle and sand. Whichever we choose, after about 1.5 miles, we then cross the road making our way across the flatlands of Pett Level alongside the Dimsdale Sewer, towards the Royal Military Canal Path, (RMCP). Our companion all the way to Winchelsea, the canal was constructed as a Napoleonic Defence and runs for 30 miles from Cliff End, Pett to Hythe, although it was never used for the purpose it was built for.
We pass through Strand Gate, to explore the Cinque Port town of Winchelsea, where the grave of Goon Spike Milligan lies within the churchyard of St Thomas the Martyr, with the words "I told you I was ill" written in Gaelic on his gravestone.
Joining a delightful section of the 1066 Country Walk, our circuit passes to the left of Wickham Manor, to later head up the grassy slope beside Hog Hill Windmill, which houses Sir Paul McCartney's recording studio. On reaching the church at Icklesham, we will then have short stop for lunch, followed by a quick pit stop at either the Queens Head or the Robin Hood Inn.
The return leg, heads back down to the RMCP, which we rejoin at Pannel Bridge, it is then just a case of following this trail all the way back to finish, when we once again reach the seawall at Cliff End, before heading back to our start point.
Dogs welcome on short lead when required
Difficulty: Moderate
Ascent: 152.4m / 500ft
Starting point - Park in one of the several laybys along the Pett Level Road, there is a very small car park with toilets in the village but it only has about five spaces. We will therefore meet for start of the walk from the steps close to the two 30 mph "Pett Level" signs at the eastern end of the village
Nearest postcode: TN35 4EN

Walk leader is Kevin Hall
