Join us in celebrating the day the world didn’t end.Potluck dinner, getting to know conference attendees before the big Saturday! Then film screening and our 'Petrov Day Ceremony' where we try to take avoiding nuclear war a bit more earnestly. Anyone interested in avoiding catastrophe, EA or ACX is welcome.
PLEASE RSVP (ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE NOT ABLE TO BRING FOOD)
Programme:
5:30 pm— Potluck Dinner
We'd appreciate it if you bring a dish to share. Bonus points for Russian/Slavic food! But we'll cook a pile of food too, so there will be enough to go around even if several people don't bring food.
Note that many attendees will be vegan/vegetarian, so plant-based dishes are appreciated. The organisers will ensure there at least some veggie options available, but if you have other dietary requirements please let us know ahead of time. We’ll do our best to accomodate you.
6:30 pm— Screening of ‘The Red Button’
Watch a Polish documentary about Stanislav Petrov and the day the world didn’t end. (Trailer: https://vimeo.com/117263027?p=0s).
7:30 pm— Dessert & Discussion
Enjoy a sweet treat and share your thoughts on the film. If you’d prefer not to participate in the closing ritual, you’re welcome head home after dessert.
8:00 pm— Petrov Day Ceremony
An hour-long 'ritual' with readings and symbolic candle lighting. The ceremony aims to make catastrophic risk emotionally salient. There’s no pressure to stay for this part of the evening if you don’t enjoy ritual, or if provoking existential dread would be detrimental for you.
9:00 pm— Finish
