Peter Zusi was raised on the Upper West Side of New York City. He studied comparative literature and social thought at Yale (BA) and The University of Chicago (MA, PhD). After completing his PhD in 2001 he taught for four years in the Slavic Department at Harvard, and then joined University College London, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, where he taught for many years. He left UCL as Professor of Czech and Comparative Literature and Vice-Dean for Research in Arts & Humanities in 2025 to take up the position of Director of NYU Prague. He holds an honorary professorship from University College London.
He is the author of The Integrity of the Avant-Garde: Karel Teige and the Biography of an Ambition (Cambridge, England: Legenda, 2024; Gold Open Access ebook) as well as a wide range of articles, chapters, and reviews on Czech, German, and comparative literature. He has particular interests in Franz Kafka , Walter Benjamin, discourses on architecture and visual culture, and social philosophy and theory of modernism and the avant-garde. He is co-editor of the FRINGE Series at UCL Press.
