In honor of Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month, Mt. Pleasant Community Library is excited to welcome Zuly Palomino Jimenez for a special Retablos Workshop for kids!Retablos are a traditional art form from the Ayacucho region in southern Peru. Each retablo is a handcrafted scene, filled with colorful figures made from a unique blend of potato masa and plaster. Artisans sculpt each piece by hand and paint it using natural dyes and fine brushes made from horsehair and cat fur. More than just decorative art, retablos serve as cultural records—capturing the spiritual beliefs, joys, struggles, and history of the Andean people.
In this hands-on workshop, fourth-generation Ayacuchano artist Zuly, will share the rich history of retablos, and kids will decorate their own figures to take home the same day!
This program is for kids ages 5+ and no registration is required.
