The 18th Perspectives Film Festival: Breakthroughs in Cinema challenges how films engage with the theme of Tradition and Modernity. Our mission was to exemplify the changes that occur in every aspect of filmmaking – themes transforming, genres
evolving, and mediums undergoing metamorphosis.
Beyond the linear confines of change lay a deeper set of questions. What is tradition and what is modern? Are these concepts in conflict or are they interrelated? How do films and filmmakers engage with these ideas?
In PFF 2025’s curated programme, Tradition and Modernity varies significantly across films. For example, pieces like Dahomey and Cocote experiment with new (and old) stylistic techniques. Landmark films like Farewell My Concubine tackle ever-changing social and cultural realities, while works like The Wiz, Walker and
Pulse redefine and subvert the genres they represent.
