The way we think about personal responsibility has a big effect on how we think about ourselves and about bigger political issues. To what degree is life the result of our choices, and to what extent is it the cards we’ve been dealt? Should public policy be based more on enabling personal responsibility or on solving the problems of a system that keeps people down? How much of our own life is in our control?
