Get ready for the arrival of spring!Fire Jumping Ceremony – Chaharshanbe Suri
The event is called Chaharshanbe Suri, meaning "Scarlet Wednesday" in Farsi. This ancient Persian practice takes place on the last Tuesday night before the spring equinox. This year, it falls on March 18.
A major part of the Chaharshanbe Suri celebration is to jump over fire. Persians have recognized fire as a sacred element, one that represents light, wisdom and truth. This cleansing practice of jumping over the fire is meant to bring good luck and good fortune as we prepare to enter a new year.
We will be serving tea and sweets and will have a mini exhibition set up to provide some context around this and other Norouz practices. This event is open to all ages and is free. Most Persians have cherished memories of celebrating Chaharshanbe Suri as a child. That's why we're really hoping to have more youth joining in on this fun learning experience. It should be a low key and wholesome event, and a great opportunity to gather in community. See you there.
