About this Event

On Friday, January 10, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the permanent exhibition of the Embassy of Greece in London "George Seferis: The Man, the Poet, the Diplomat" will open its doors to visitors at the Hellenic ("Ambassadorial") Residence in London (51 Upper Brook Street, London, W1K 2BT).

Launched on October 24, 2023, on the 60th anniversary of the announcement of the Nobel Prize Award to George Seferis, the exhibition is articulated around three sections representing qualities - two particular and one universal - which the leading Greek author loyally served throughout his life. Those of the poet, the diplomat and the man (human being).

At the historic "Seferis Office", where the Greek Nobel laureate and diplomat lived and worked during his tenure as Ambassador of Greece to the United Kingdom (1957-1962), visitors will have the opportunity to discover through a series of objects (photographs, personal items, drawings, official and personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, Greek and foreign editions of Seferis' works, etc.) aspects of George Seferis’ work, life and personality, as well as to learn more about his deep and lasting relationship with the United Kingdom.

The idea for the exhibition came from an initiative of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, who made possible that 32 objects and works related to George Seferis were donated to the Embassy from the Anna Londou and Nikos Paisios' collection. These 32 objects formed the initial core of the exhibition, which was subsequently enriched with more works.

The exhibition was made possible thanks to the contributions of a series of individuals and institutions that provided material, objects and artworks from their collections and archives, including the Service of Diplomatic and Historical Archives (YDIA) of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Gennadius Library, the George Seferis Photographic Archive / National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation, the Louth Museum, and the artist Leda Kontogiannopoulou.
