Perinatal mental health symposium:
With WA in the midst of a baby boom we are looking at more new parents than seen in generations. We know that at least one in five women and one in ten men will experience mental health concerns in the perinatal period (conception until the youngest child is 4) so with the increase in births we can expect to see an increase in the number of perinatal mental health concerns.
With a rental crisis, the economic impacts and the increased incidence of family and domestic violence, intimate partner violence, reproductive coercion and the mental health impacts of isolation and birth trauma it pays to be proactive!
It takes a village!
We talk about ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ yet where is the village? We are part of it! The counsellors, psychologists, social workers, doctors, nurses, physios, OTs, childcare workers, mental health workers, the people who work with families between conception until the child is four.
Do you know what to look for and where to access support?
As the professionals it is often our role to be the expert but information is changing all the time!

At WHWS we have focused on perinatal mental health for 20 years. We know our stuff but information is always changing. When we sat down with a range of professionals working in the Perinatal Mental Health space and with clients accessing services. We asked professionals what they wanted to know more about and we asked clients what they wished their care providers knew. Common themes emerged.
FDV in the perinatal space - how do we screen for it?
Birth trauma is becoming more and more common
Normalising perinatal mental health, what is normal anyway?
Clients want to be seen as a person first and a parent, baby incubator or baby taxi second.
WHWS in partnership with CPPS have come together to run a perinatal mental health symposium.
Find out about the new FDV in the perinatal period screening tool developed by SHQ, learn about birth trauma from Kirsten Booth, Dr Belinda McClean will discuss the role of OT in the perinatal space, and Valerie Ah Chee from Baby Coming – You Ready? will cover how to see the person. The formal information session will be followed by a sundowner networking event where you can meet with other people working in the perinatal space.
We want to support people working with families in the perinatal period (from conception until youngest child is four).

This event is perfect for:
Professionals working specifically in perinatal mental health
People working with families anytime in the perinatal period
Students interested in increasing their skills and knowledge in this area.
Anyone who wants to learn more about perinatal mental health!

A great way to increase your knowledge and to network with others working in this space.
