  • Review the pathophysiology of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and discuss preventative measures to reduce NEC and treatment options.
  • Discuss the clinical utilization of probiotics in the NICU, including safety concerns and implementation strategies.
  • Discuss recent trends in perinatal and neonatal litigation and the role of the nurse to provide safe care and minimize preventable harm.

OUR SPEAKERS:

Nancy O’Brien-Abel, MN, RNC-OB

Nancy is a perinatal clinical nurse specialist with over 35 years’ experience in caring for women with normal and complicated pregnancies. As an Affiliate Instructor, University of Washington School of Nursing, and Teaching Associate, University of Washington Medical School, she has actively focused on multi-disciplinary education and collaboration. She is a nationally recognized speaker, author, and consultant on care of women in labor and birth, fetal monitoring, and patient safety. Nancy is an active member in AWHONN, contributing to various position statements, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, and co-editing AWHONN's new 2021 edition of “Perinatal Nursing”. Nancy is passionate about improving the quality of care for mothers and their neonates through evidence-based practice.


Heaven Holdbrooks, RN, MSN, PNP, CNS, RNC-NIC

Heaven Holdbrooks is a Clinical Nurse Specialist and a board-certified Neonatal Nurse. She works in a level III NICU in Southern California. Holdbrooks obtained her BSN from the University of California, Irvine, and her MSN from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has worked in the NICU for the past 10 years and is well-versed in quality improvement initiatives. She is passionate about improving the health and well-being of children and their families.
