About this Event

Let’s smell together! Join perfumer and instructor Daniel Kraosofski to explore, compare, and contrast 15+ diverse patchouli samples- including oils of various ages, isolated molecules, and synthetics- while evaluating their unique olfactory and chemical characteristics through guided sensory analysis and discussion.

Dive nose-first into the world of patchouli, the legendary, love-it-or-leave-it scent that’s inspired perfumers, hippies, and indie rockers for generations! In this immersive two-hour class, you’ll sniff your way through 15+ unique patchouli samples, from fresh, just-distilled oils that smell like a rainforest in full bloom, to rare 40-year-old bottles with the kind of depth that could rival a vintage library. Plus, we’ll explore isolated molecules and modern synthetics... because even patchouli has its science lab moments.

You’ll discover how patchouli’s earthy, hypnotic aroma evolves with age (think fine wine, or maybe a funky cheese), compare light and dark distillations, and sharpen your senses with guided smelling exercises designed to surprise and delight.

Along the way, you’ll learn to spot the subtle differences between patchouli from different regions, and between natural, aged, and synthetic versions.

Through group activities and lively discussion, you’ll uncover what makes patchouli so endlessly fascinating and occasionally controversial.

Join us to deepen your appreciation of patchouli's multifaceted character and its enduring significance in the art of scent creation. Whether you’re a fragrance enthusiast, an aspiring perfumer, or just curious about the magic behind one of perfumery’s most polarizing materials, this class is for you!

For students looking to expand their olfactory prowess: all levels are welcome.

Cancellation Policy

When we host a class or workshop, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials. With all that said, here’s our refund policy for in person classes!

– Cancellation with refund or credit requests made 1 week or more (7 days) before the scheduled session will be honored with gusto! We’ll miss you, but will 100% refund your spot.

– Refunds or class credits requested less than 7 days before the scheduled session: We will refund you 50% of your class fee. Why? Because we’ve already ordered the materials.

– Refunds or class credits requested less than 72 hours before the class, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted.

– Cancellations or refund requests must be made by email (hello@artandolfaction).

Note also that event tickets are non-transferable.
