Join Terrence Spivey for a performance of Our Land: Outta da Horse’s Mouth. This thought-provoking play continues Spivey’s exploration of Black identity, history, and culture, offering a rich and powerful theatrical experience.
Our Land: Outta da Horse’s Mouth! is a dramedy that follows a young Mabel Dennison, granddaughter to Lottie “Kanko” Dennison, one of the 110 Clotilda survivors and South Carolina born boat pilot, former slave, James Dennison. In the play, she shares the history about her grandmother’s journey from Dahomey to her and her husband’s contributions as skilled entrepreneurs. Her knowledge evokes the grandparents into her storytelling with a historical blended, folksy humor and interaction with the audience.
Terrence Spivey is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University, is a distinguished theater leader with a legacy of groundbreaking work. Spivey is former artistic director of Karamu House, the oldest black theatre in the country. He serves as the founding director of Powerful Long Ladder Ensemble in Cleveland, OH, and an associate with All Things Africatown in Mobile, Alabama.
His most recent project was An Ocean in My Bones, a poignant play about the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to bring enslaved Africans to the United States. It was in collaboration with Clotilda Descendants Association.
He recipient of Color of Change Preserving Truth in Education Award and recently selected a 2024 Roe Green Visiting Voice Ambassador by the Dramatists Guild Foundation.
Through his work, Spivey continues to amplify voices and narratives that demand to be heard.
