The musical archive of medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen has been reworked for bandura and voice by performance artists Marie-Pierre Brébant & François Chaignaud. For several years, the French duo has been unravelling the 12th-century manuscripts which contain all the music of the canonised Benedictine abbess Hildegard.
During the 2.5-hour performance at the Horta Hall, musician Marie-Pierre Brébant plays the bandura (Ukrainian harp) while choreographer François Chaignaud completes the piece through voice and dance. They effortlessly immerse themselves in the medieval mindset, catapulting you back to the Central Germany of Hildegard von Bingen during the 12th century.
With ‘Symphonia Harmoniæ Cælestium Revelationum’, the artists deliver a comprehensive experience that can be felt as a trance where they allow their, as it were psychedelic, sensations to flow through to the audience. Fascinated by the ancient scriptures, they now passionately perform a philosophical performance aimed at meditation, contemplation and healing.
