his reflective, beautiful film from Wim Wenders follows Hirayama (Kōji Yakusho) as he goes about the routines of his daily life in Tokyo. He wakes up, tends his plants, goes to work as a toilet cleaner, listens to tapes as he drives, reads before bed, and dreams abstract, impressionistic dreams. Over the course of a few days, though, unexpected interactions and events begin to disrupt those carefully constructed routines, in both painful and joyful ways. The film premiered in Cannes in 2023, where it was nominated for the Palme D'Or and won both the Ecumenical Jury Prize and Best Actor for Kōji Yakusho.
This film is programmed by Star & Shadow volunteer Rebecca Hallett, a travel writer and Japan specialist whose book Ultimate Japan includes an entry on the artist- and architect-designed Tokyo Toilets featured in Perfect Days. She'll read the entry to introduce the screening (don't worry, no spoilers!) and will be around afterwards to answer all your Japan travel – or Japan toilet – questions. You can pick up a copy of Ultimate Japan at local indie bookshop 1b Books, a ten-minute walk from Star & Shadow.
