About the Presenter
Dr. Bree Jimenez's research, teaching, and community service focuses on general curriculum access and assessment for students with extensive support needs (ESN; i.e., intellectual disability, multiple disability and autism). She has published several research manuscripts in peer reviewed journals, multiple book chapters, research-based curriculum, and multiple books on strategies to support academics for students with disabilities. She works closely with teachers, school systems and state departments of education both nationally and internationally to support grade aligned access to the general curriculum for students with extensive support needs, math and engineering education, Universal Design for Learning, inclusive practices, and self-determination. She is also an honorary research associate in special education at the University of Sydney (2017-current).
Target Audience: (Classroom Teachers and Support Professionals, Parents, and other care providers who guide transition toward adult independence for students with ASD, Learning and other disabilities)
Training Description:
This presentation will include hands-on activities, videos of real-life classrooms, role-playing, and planning tools for implementation of instructional strategies in the classroom to support students with extensive support needs and autism. Six research and evidence based instructional tools will be shared across the day, including peer supports, student directed learning, systematic instruction and assistive technology. This presentation will use a “Tell-Show-Try-Apply” (Browder, Jimenez et al., 2011) approach to not only tell participants about strategies but show examples of how these strategies have provided greater general curriculum grade-level curricular access and led to student success in real classrooms with real students. Participants will try out strategies, role play and gain confidence in their implementation fidelity, as well and have time to make a game plan for implementation within their own classrooms moving forward.
Training Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1. Align a student’s specially designed instruction (SDI) to general curriculum grade level specific content
2. Identify evidence-based practices that support students with ESN and Autism gain access to the general curriculum
3. Use systematic instruction strategies (e.g., time delay, task analysis, least intrusive prompting systems) with fidelity
4. Develop a teacher specific personalized professional development plan to build their fluency, maintenance, and generalization of research and evidence-based practices to support students with ESN and Autism.
