It’s time for the 30th annual People’s Thanksgiving, hosted by Chicago Freedom Road Socialist Organization!
After the George Floyd Rebellion swept the country — and the world — in 2020, and after the for-profit healthcare system in the US caused the worst death toll of any country from the Covid-19 pandemic, we knew a new stage was being set for the struggles of the working class and oppressed.
We invite you to come together with us to celebrate the people, the movements and the organizations that have fought back and won gains!
Safety note: To meet in person, we will enact covid safety precautions. Everyone must be vaccinated and masked. If not vaccinated, you must show a negative test result. We will take temperatures at the door. We will limit the crowd to 100 persons in a room that can seat 300. We’ll have servers so multiple people don’t have to touch the service ware. We’ll maintain social distancing during the meal unless you’re sitting with family or those in your household. Finally, the large conference room in Teamsters City has a modern and efficient air handling system.
Honored guests to include:
Empowering Communities for Public Safety (ECPS) Coalition
For the first time in Chicago history, ECPS will put power over the rules governing police actions in the hands of the occupied Black and Latino communities. The ECPS coalition is also poised to continue on the road to community control of the police when they pass the referendum for direct elections of the police accountability commission. We will be honoring three different members of the ECPS Coalition:
—Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression
—Desmon Yancy of IMAN (Inner-City Muslim Action Network)
—Greg Kelley, President of SEIU HCII (Service Employees International Union Healthcare Illinois Indiana Missouri Kansas)
US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN)
In May, USPCN played a leading role in the massive mobilizations of the Palestinian community and their allies in Chicago in support of uprisings in all of Palestine in response to Israeli assault on Gaza and Sheikh Jarrah. That heroic resistance defended Palestine on all fronts and defeated the racist, apartheid state in this battle. USPCN continues other initiatives in Congress, and in organizing the Arab and Muslim communities against racist Republicans like Sharon Brannigan.
Juan Campos of Teamsters United Local 705
The O’Brien/Zuckerman slate of officers for leadership of the Teamsters could defeat the Jimmy Hoffa, Jr. sell outs and bring back fighting trade unionism – just in time for the 2023 UPS negotiations. Already Teamsters United struck down at the IBT convention the hated 2/3rds rule that the Hoffa group used to enact the 2018 UPS contract despite the majority voting it down.
Denita Armstrong-Shaffer of the Human Rights Committee – Chicago Teachers Union
Around the country, white nationalists have banned anti-racism education in schools and discussions about race in the classroom. The CTU Human Rights Committee has stepped up in response, sharing anti-racist curriculum developed by CTU members. They have also taken a stand against racist policing in Chicago.
Since 1992, Freedom Road Socialist Organization and Fight Back! News have honored local activists and groups in Chicago who have waged struggle and scored victories. Join us for our 30th annual event, together with our honored guests.
