About this Event

THIS IS A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP - PLEASE BOOK TICKETS FOR BOTH DAYS

We are looking for the designers and makers of the future. The People's Pavilion offers young people in East London the opportunity to gain new skills, work with leading industry figures, gain experience in design studios and enter a competition that will see a winning design team and their pavilion design built. The winning Pavilion will be built for all to see and experience and will host a cultural festival produced by young people.

Criteria:

  • You must be aged between 14 and 18
  • You must live in Waltham Forest (if you live in a different East London borough - search for yours in Eventbrite)
  • You must form a team of 3-4 young people to enter the competition (if you don't have a team, don't worry, we will create teams during the workshop).
  • You must be available on attend both the Saturday and Sunday workshops days
  • If you and your design idea are shortlisted to represent your borough after the weekend workshops, you will need to be available during February half term in 2023 - Monday 13th February to Friday 17th February - where all seven teams representing each East London borough will take part in a development week
  • You do not need to have ANY previous experience, so if you’re sitting at home thinking, I want to get involved but I don’t think I have the skills, then think again, we want YOU to get involved!

Weekend Workshop Schedule:

Saturday; you will work with our architecture and engineer team, comprising of Scale Rule CIC and a collective of professional architects, engineers and architecture graduates from across London. You will learn how to create a concept design, taking the ideas in your mind and turning them into a vision of the paper. You will be given a design brief and supported to develop a design idea that responds to that brief.

Sunday; You will make models of your designs, to test how they stand, you'll sketch plans and learn about sustainable design and materials. In the afternoon you will present your concept design to a panel (we'll help you build confidence in doing this - so don't not worry!

Selecting a team to go through to February:

A panel of professional judges will select a design team from each of the East London boroughs (7 teams in total) and those teams will be invited to develop their design ideas further.

The People’s Pavilion project has been created to flip the script on who gets a say in the design of cultural spaces. This project invites young people to work in partnership with professionals from the design, engineering and construction industries to design and build their own space (Pavilion). All shortlisted designs will be shown at a public exhibition at the official venue of the People's Pavilion - Patchworks, Leyton and the overall winner voted for by the public.

  • Learn about the design and build industry & career routes / opportunities to get into the profession
  • If you win the overall design competition - you will win an all expenses trip to the Venice Biennial in Italy
