About this Event
PEOPLE’S BANNER WORKSHOP is a social practice project by Migiwa Orimo that facilitates and documents people's fight for social justice in Southwestern Ohio. The workshop provides free visual aids (banners, signs, props) for direct action, protest rallies, picket lines, and other street actions.
Unlike traditional studio work, the banners are often created quickly to respond to urgent calls for action. They can be delivered or mailed to wherever they are needed. Once made, the banners belong to the activists, who can circulate them among their groups and use them in various marches, rallies, and direct actions. The banners amplify the messages of workers, immigrants, farmers, students, and ordinary citizens, making social actions visually engaging and transformative in public spaces. They are “public” art that exists as a form of allyship.
In addition to production, the Workshop offers citizens and activists a space—whether in the artist’s studio or public venues—for building comradeship. Grounded in the notion of “Citizen Artists,” the People’s Banner Workshop welcomes participation from both artists and non-artists to amplify their collective voice.
