People called Quakers: Celebrating 400 years since the birth of George Fox

This year marks 400 years since the birth of George Fox, a founder of the Quaker movement and the Society of Friends. Visit the Level 2 atrium at the Central City Library to view a rare 1694 edition of George Fox’s journal as well as other key works from the Rare Book collection.

The display runs from 5 June to 31 July, with an opportunity to see more of the Quaker Collection up close with Rare Book curators Jane Wild and Renée Orr on Thursday 4 July 10.30-11.30am on Level 2 in the Whare Wānanga.

The display is themed around the five Quaker values or ‘Testimonies’: Peace, Simplicity, Integrity, Equality and Sustainability. It features original items and images from books in the Quaker Collection, gifted to Auckland Libraries by the Society of Friends Mt Eden in 1995. The display also includes other books published by Quakers. All of the items are part of the Rare Book collection.
