ABOUT THE DAY

Get inspired by Keynote Speaker, Damien, Myers, MD, MPH

Damien Myers, MD, MPH left clinical medicine in 2010 to teach and cultivate the next generation of Black health professionals. In the process he founded MedReimagined, a Baltimore-based program aimed at inspiring the minds of young people through his own experiences and empowering students to consider becoming physicians.
Students will break-off into small groups, with healthcare professionals at their side, for six hands-on, simulated activities, including:
- Building an artificial heart.
- Performing life-saving techniques during cardiac arrest.
- Stopping bleeding from a wound.
- Learning how to perform hands-only CPR.
- Using ultrasound to look at the heart and internal organs.
- Assessing four vital signs (breathing, blood pressure, pulse/heart rate, temperature).
Parents, teachers and other adult attendees will hear from a lineup of experts, each with a unique message about preparing students to pursue healthcare careers. We’ll cover topics like the SAT and securing merit-based scholarships, the path to becoming a doctor, and college admissions & financial aid.

Lunch with the experts

During the lunch break, students will sit with their small groups and get the opportunity for 1:1 conversation with the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals assigned to their group.
After lunch, Youth Summit participants will get to hear from and ask questions of five expert providers who represent diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
About the Black Men In White Coats Partnership
Black Men in White Coats started in 2013 in response to an alarming report that highlighted the decreasing number of Black men applying to medical school, a reality that would make worse the too few Black male physicians in the United States. Since that time, the organization has worked closely with medical schools, health systems, high schools, and physicians to provide inspiration and mentorship to racially diverse youth, with the goal of inspiring them to pursue careers in medicine. WellSpan is excited to serve as the Pennsylvania partner to the Black Men In White Coats organization.
