About this Event

Join us for an epic hike up to the highest peak in South Wales - Pen Y Fan. This walk is the easiest route up to the peak from Pont ar Daf car park, so suitable for those who want to hike a mountain for the first time. After taking those summit selfies, we will head over to Corn Du before dropping down via the Cambrian way to the Storey Arms and walking over to the car park. We will have 2 qualified mountain leaders for this walk.

Distance: 8km / 5 miles

Time: ~5 hours

Elevation: 540m

Grade: Moderate - A steep walk but a good intro to mountain walking.

Terrain: A mixture of gravel tracks, rocky ground and muddy trails.

About your guides:

Hi I'm Alice, qualified mountain leader and CEO of The Adventure Girls Club. I'm passionate about reconnecting women back nature through adventure and outdoor skills. I set up the club because I didn't feel like I belonged in the outdoor community and I wanted to create a safe space for women like me to head out and enjoy the outdoors in their own way. I love meeting all the lush people who come along to our events and it's best feeling seeing everyone come away feeling more connected to nature and making connections with other like-minded women too.

We will also be joined by Lottie, a qualified Mountain Leader based in Bristol to assist with the day.

Transport:

By Car: We will meet at Pont are Daf car park. The car park is free for NT members, £7.50 otherwise.

By train/bus: The T4 bus goes past the car park which you can get from Merthyr Bus Station.

Liftshare: It would be great to liftshare as much as possible, if you can offer someone a lift please either post in the Geneva app (for members) or in the Facebook group.

What to bring:

  • Hiking boots
  • Plenty of snacks and a packed lunch
  • Water (at least 1 litre)
  • Waterproofs/warm layers/hat/gloves
  • Small first aid kit with personal Medic*tion
  • A day rucksack to put water, lunch and layers in.

Consent Form:

If you are booked onto the hike please fill in one of these forms no later than the night before. You will not be allowed to partake in the hike unless you have filled out this form. I will send out a reminder 2 days before the event.

Toilets:

There are toilets at the start of this hike but apart from that you will have to embrace what I like to call a 'wild wee'! If you need to go, just tell someone in the group and hang back for some privacy.

Safety:

I like to make these hikes as enjoyable as possible for everyone, so I keep a slow and steady pace. It's about taking in the views and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on these hikes, please either consult your doctor or let me know your concerns.

I am a Qualified Mountain Leader and I am level 3 Outdoor First Aid trained so I will be on hand in case of an emergency.

Dogs:

Well behaved dogs are allowed on my walks, however I cannot guarantee that all stiles are dog friendly. Dogs will need to go on leads when walking through livestock or near roads.
