This Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) course was designed to equip individuals in recovery with the foundational knowledge and tools needed to provide peer recovery support and recovery coaching to individuals strugling with substance use, problem gambling, and mental health. You will learn how to apply these tools in clinical and non-clinical settings. After completing this course, you will have fulfilled the educational requirment to obtain state certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Suport Specialist through the Nevada Certification Board.
Course Highlights
- In person, February 3rd through 7th, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM each day
- 46 hours, including 40 instructor-led hours and 6 hours of independent learning
- Covers essential skills and knowledge focused on the four domains of peer work: Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, and Recovery/Wellness Support, and Ethical Responsibility
- Cost of $249.99
- Scholarships are available for active members of our Community Recovery Center.
About Membership and Scholarships
To obtain a scholarship for the course which will cover all course fees and materials you may register to be a member of the Community Recovery Center. Membership costs nothing but will require participation in a 90-minute peer group each week for 12 weeks before applying for the PRSS Certification Training.
We call the weekly peer groups Member Circles. The weekly Member Circles are a time where members of the local recovery community get together to share resources, updates at the Community Recovery Center, and recovery topics. You will have a chance to participate in peer support, understand the role of the recovery coach, and meet other members, peer interns, and certified peer recovery coaches. Course Overview
This course covers the core competencies of peer support in the four domains of peer work: advocacy, mentoring and education, recovery and wellness support, and ethical responsibility. You will learn how to effectively advocate for individuals and foster self-advocacy skills, be provided with strategies to support individuals in achieving and maintining whole health and wellness, and explore the skills you need to build meaningful connections and walk alongside peers in their recovery process.
PRSS Certification Requirements
Though not required to take this course, PRSS certification through the Nevada Certification Board requires NV residency, a high school diploma or quivalent, and lived experience in recovery from substance use, mental health, or problem gambling.
