What is a Peer Recovery Coach or Peer Specialist?

Peer support workers are people who...

  • have been successful in the recovery process who help others experiencing similar situations.
  • use shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment to support others
  • help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process
  • provide support beyond the clinical setting into everyday life

While this definition focuses on those in the behavioral health or addictions treatment settings, peer specialists may work in a variety of other settings, provided that they have core experiences in common with the population served (eg. chronic health conditions, justice involvement, homelessness, military, etc). Peer Coaches, Specialist, Coordinators may be found in a variety of settings including but not limited to social service organizations, jails/prisons, treatment centers, drop in community centers, homeless service centers, and community based organizations.

We believe that an individual has entered recovery the moment that they say they have.

Peers use the following competencies:

RECOVERY-ORIENTED: Peer workers help those they serve identify and build on strengths and empower them to choose for themselves, recognizing that there are multiple pathways to recovery.

PERSON-CENTERED: Peer recovery support is personalized to align with the specific hopes, goals, and preferences of the individual served and to respond to specific needs the individuals has identified to the peer worker.

VOLUNTARY: Participation in peer recovery support services is always contingent on peer choice.

RELATIONSHIP-FOCUSED: The relationship between the peer worker and the peer is the foundation on which peer recovery support services and support are provided and is respectful, trusting, empathetic, collaborative, and mutual.

TRAUMA-INFORMED: Peer recovery support utilizes a strengths-based framework that emphasizes physical, psychological, and emotional safety
